China had always been on my list of dream destinations, but I didn’t just want a fleeting visit to one tiny location for a short period of time. I wanted to wait until I could have a full immersion and try to genuinely get a sense of the China of today.
I think the world order is changing rapidly before our eyes, and China, whether people like to hear it or not, is becoming increasingly relevant.
We thought that 2026 was the moment to try and scratch beneath the surface. I think it is a moment when people are starting to look east rather than west. We saw it just with Sir Keir Starmer; he just went out to China on a trade mission.
We already know that the Australians have been looking for closer links to China, so I do think we would be naive not to at least explore other options, and I think the East is looking increasingly interesting for many people on so many different levels. And for me.
