Ukraine will become a major supplier of military equipment to European countries after the war with Russia, states US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker.
According to the diplomat, planning for Ukraine’s post-war recovery and economy should start today.
“They’re certainly going to be a large provider of military equipment to Europe as they sped this 5% that they all agreed to,” Whitaker said.
The ambassador also added that Ukraine will receive significant financial support, mostly from Europe, to help rebuild the country after the war.
Increase in defense spending
In December 2024, Donald Trump stated that the US could leave NATO if European countries did not raise their defense spending from the then-current 2% to 5% of GDP.
At the NATO summit in The Hague in June, member states agreed to increase defense budgets to 5% of GDP over the next ten years.
Earlier, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported that global defense spending reached record levels last year, the highest since the Cold War.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in the US. During his meeting with President Donald Trump, he pledged to pursue lasting peace and compel Russia to end the war, according to the Ukrainian leader’s Telegram channel.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that “we all want to end this war quickly and reliably,” emphasizing that peace must be long-lasting.
“Not like years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East – the Donbas region – and Putin used that simply as a springboard for a new attack. Or when Ukraine was given so-called ‘security guarantees’ in 1994, which didn’t work,” the president said.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine should not have ceded Crimea to Russia in 2014, just as after 2022, Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv.
He noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are currently achieving successes in the Donetsk and Sumy regions and stressed, “we will defend Ukraine, effectively guarantee security, and our people will always be grateful to President Trump, to everyone in America, and to each partner for their support and invaluable assistance.”
“Russia must end this war, which it itself started. I hope that our joint strength with America and our European friends will force Russia into real peace,” Zelenskyy concluded.
Summit in Washington
On Sunday, August 17, representatives of the Coalition of the Willing met in Brussels. After the meeting, President Zelenskyy and European leaders traveled to the United States.
Today, August 18, Zelenskyy and the European delegation will meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss potential scenarios for ending the war in Ukraine.
Ahead of the meeting, Trump expressed Washington’s readiness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees to help bring the war to a close.
The US leader also indicated that Zelenskyy could quickly end the war if he agreed to recognize Russian control over Crimea and forgo Ukraine’s NATO membership.

On Monday morning, August 18, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv with drones. One of the Shahed drones struck a residential building, causing a fire, and there are reports of casualties, according to Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov’s Telegram.
The first explosions from the drone attack were heard around 04:48 Kyiv time. Later, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that strikes from Shahed drones were confirmed in the Industrialnyi district. One of the strikes hit a multi-story residential building.
It soon became known that the impact caused a fire.
“In the residential building hit by the Shahed, there is a fire in two sections. In one section, floors two through four are burning, while in the other, the top floor is on fire,” the statement said.
Terekhov added that due to collapsed ceilings, there is a risk that people may be trapped under the debris.
Meanwhile, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, reported that currently two people have been injured in the city.
“A 25-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman were injured by the strike of an enemy UAV in the Industrialnyi district. They are receiving medical assistance. Emergency services are working at the site,” he wrote.
Updated at 05:50
The mayor later clarified that 15 people have now been injured in the city, including four children. Two of the children are aged 6 and 10.

US President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy could instantly end the war in Ukraine. As a condition, he hinted at giving up Crimea and abandoning NATO membership, according to Trump’s post.
“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight,” wrote the head of the White House.
He then suggested recalling how it all began, mentioning the loss of Crimea and hinting at rejecting Ukraine’s NATO membership.
“No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!” he concluded.
“Peace” in exchange for territory
On the night of August 16, US President Donald Trump met with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. Their summit took place in Alaska, with the war in Ukraine being the key topic of negotiations.
After the summit, Trump gave an interview to Fox News, where he advised making a deal with Russia, stressing that the next move depends on Zelenskyy.
Trump originally went into the summit to achieve an immediate ceasefire – otherwise, he had promised to impose secondary sanctions. However, after the meeting, he began promoting the idea of a full-fledged peace agreement.
According to Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, this shift came as a result of significant progress in talks with Russia.
Following the Alaska meeting, reports emerged in the media about what Putin wants in exchange for peace. Allegedly, Russia is demanding a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk region in return for freezing the frontlines in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
Moscow is also reportedly ready to discuss pulling its troops out of parts of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. In addition, Putin wants Crimea recognized as Russian – though it remains unclear whether only by the US, or by all Western nations and Ukraine as well.
Beyond that, Russia has further demands regarding the status of the Russian language and more. A full list was reported by RBC-Ukraine.
Meanwhile, today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet Trump at the White House, where they are expected to discuss the details of ending the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders will need to clarify the security guarantees the US is willing to provide in exchange for a meeting between the Ukrainian leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Bloomberg.
Bloomberg noted that among the group of politicians accompanying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are individuals with whom Donald Trump has strong personal ties, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
The European leaders’ delegation will aim to obtain a clear answer from Trump on what specific security guarantees the US is willing to provide to facilitate a meeting between Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin.
According to a source cited by the outlet, besides avoiding a new confrontation like the spat on February 28 and maintaining Trump’s interest in mediation, Zelenskyy’s objectives in the talks are to learn more about Putin’s demands, determine the timing of a trilateral meeting, and push the US toward stricter sanctions against Russia.
“Whether he can achieve any of these goals will depend on how much, in the view of European officials, Putin has gotten into Trump’s head,” Bloomberg stated.
